Loading a barbell safely is a repeatable physical process: identify the equipment, calculate the plates, keep the bar balanced while adding them, secure the load when appropriate, and check both sides before lifting.
The arithmetic is only one part. This guide focuses on what to do at the rack or platform so the bar stays controlled from the first plate to the last.
Before touching the plates
Confirm the bar
Do not assume every bar weighs 45 lb. A men's Olympic bar is commonly 45 lb or 20 kg, while women's Olympic bars, technique bars, trap bars, safety squat bars, and Smith machines can weigh something different.

Confirm the target and plate stack

Keep the result in front of you while loading. This is especially useful when the stack uses several plate sizes.
Check the space
Make sure the bar is supported by a stable rack or is resting securely on the platform. Move loose plates, bags, and bottles out of the path where you will walk and where the sleeves may move.
Recognize the plates you are using
Common pound plates include 45, 35, 25, 10, 5, and 2.5 lb. Common kilogram plates include 25, 20, 15, 10, 5, 2.5, and 1.25 kg.
Do not identify a plate by color alone unless you know the gym follows a particular color standard. Read the molded or printed number. Bumper plates can also look surprisingly similar in diameter even when their weights differ.
Before lifting, the plates on the left and right must add up to the same amount. Mirroring the plate sizes and their order makes that easier to verify at a glance.
How to load a racked barbell
For a bar supported evenly in a squat rack or bench rack:
- Take the first plate to one sleeve. Hold it securely with both hands and slide it fully onto the sleeve.
- Add the matching plate to the other sleeve. Keeping the load roughly balanced reduces unnecessary movement in the rack.
- Continue alternating sides. Add one matching pair at a time rather than finishing an entire heavy stack on one side first.
- Keep the order the same. If the left sleeve is 45, then 25, then 5 from inside to outside, copy that order on the right.
- Install collars when appropriate. Follow the rules for the equipment, lift, and facility you are using. Ensure each collar is fully engaged and seated against the outer plate.
Do not put fingers between a plate and the rack upright. Keep a deliberate grip on each plate until it is supported by the sleeve.
How to load a barbell on the floor
Deadlifts and Olympic lifts often begin with the bar on a platform. The first large plate can be awkward because the sleeve is close to the floor.
- Slide the first full-size plate onto one sleeve.
- Add the matching first plate to the opposite sleeve before building a large stack.
- Use a deadlift jack, plate wedge, or a small plate under the first plate if the gym provides one. This raises the loaded sleeve so later plates slide on more easily.
- Add the remaining pairs, alternating sides and matching the order.
- Remove the jack or wedge and attach collars when appropriate.
Avoid sharply lifting or dropping an unsupported end of a partially loaded bar. A heavily loaded sleeve can make the other end rise or shift.
Check the bar before lifting
Pause for a five-second check:
- Do both sides have the same plates?
- Are the plates in the same order?
- Are the plates pushed fully onto the sleeves?
- Are the collars installed and secured when required?
- Is the rack height appropriate for the exercise?
- Is the lifting area clear?
Then begin with a controlled warm-up load. If the bar feels unexpectedly uneven or much heavier than planned, stop and rack or lower it safely. Recheck the bar, plates, and target instead of trying to force the set.
How to unload a racked barbell
Unloading deserves the same attention as loading:
- Make sure the bar is centered and supported by both rack hooks.
- Remove the collars.
- Remove one plate from one side.
- Remove the matching plate from the other side.
- Continue alternating until the bar is empty.
- Return plates to their proper storage pegs without leaving them in the walking area.
Never strip a large stack completely from one side while the other sleeve remains heavily loaded. The remaining weight can pull the bar sideways or tip it from the rack.
How to unload a barbell on the floor
For a floor-loaded bar, a jack or wedge makes unloading easier. Raise one side, remove plates until the sleeve is manageable, lower it under control, and repeat on the other side. Keep the bar from rolling and keep hands and feet away from the path of the plates.
If the load is too awkward to control, ask for help rather than improvising with unstable objects.
Common beginner mistakes
Loading by color instead of reading the weight
Colors can vary outside standardized competition equipment. Check the number on every unfamiliar plate.
Building one side completely first
A large imbalance can shift a racked bar or lift the unloaded end of a floor bar. Add and remove meaningful loads in matching pairs.
Missing collars when they are required
Plates can move when a bar tilts. Use the collar type supplied by the gym when the lift and facility call for it, and learn how it locks before beginning the set.
Trusting memory after changing the target
