The first time you walk up to a barbell, it can feel like a math quiz you did not study for.
You know the number you want to lift, but the plates are all different sizes and colors, and everyone else seems to just *know* what to grab.
Let’s make barbell math simple so you can load the bar, double-check it, and start lifting.
The simple truth
To calculate plates on a barbell, you really just need three steps:
1. Know how much the bar weighs. 2. Subtract the bar weight from your target weight. 3. Split the remaining weight evenly on both sides of the bar.
That is all plate loading is. The rest is practice.
Step 1: Know your bar weight
Most standard barbells in commercial gyms weigh:
- 45 lb (about 20 kg) for a full-size Olympic bar
- 35 lb (sometimes used for women’s bars or smaller bars)
- 15–25 lb for short “training” or technique bars

- 20 kg (about 44 lb) for a men’s Olympic bar
- 15 kg (about 33 lb) for a women’s Olympic bar
If you are not sure:
- Look at the end of the bar; some have the weight printed.
- Ask gym staff.
- Treat it as a 45 lb (or 20 kg) bar only if you are pretty sure it is a full-size bar.
Getting the bar weight wrong is one of the easiest ways to mess up your total.
Step 2: Subtract the bar from your target weight
Say you want to lift 95 lb.
If the bar is 45 lb:
- 95 (target) − 45 (bar) = 50 lb of plates total
That 50 lb has to be split across both sides:
- 50 ÷ 2 = 25 lb per side
So you need 25 lb on each side of the bar.
Another example: you want to lift 135 lb with a 45 lb bar.
- 135 − 45 = 90 lb of plates total
- 90 ÷ 2 = 45 lb per side
So you need 45 lb on each side.
Once you know how much weight goes on each side, you just have to build that number with the plates you have.
Step 3: Build each side using plate sizes
Common plate sizes in many U.S. gyms (pounds):
- 45 lb
- 35 lb
- 25 lb
- 10 lb
- 5 lb
- 2.5 lb
Common plate sizes in kilograms:
- 25 kg
- 20 kg
- 15 kg
- 10 kg
- 5 kg
- 2.5 kg
- 1.25 kg
You want your plates to add up to the per-side number you just calculated.
### Example 1: 95 lb on a 45 lb bar
We already found we need 25 lb per side.
Easy option:
- One 25 lb plate on each side
Total: 45 lb bar + 25 + 25 = 95 lb
### Example 2: 115 lb on a 45 lb bar
1. Subtract bar: 115 − 45 = 70 lb of plates total 2. Split: 70 ÷ 2 = 35 lb per side
Now build 35 lb per side:
- One 25 lb + one 10 lb plate on each side
- 25 + 10 = 35 per side
Total: 45 lb bar + (25 + 10) + (25 + 10) = 115 lb
### Example 3: 60 kg on a 20 kg bar
1. Subtract bar: 60 − 20 = 40 kg of plates total 2. Split: 40 ÷ 2 = 20 kg per side
Build 20 kg per side:
- One 20 kg plate per side
Total: 20 kg bar + 20 + 20 = 60 kg
If your gym does not have the “perfect” plates for simple combos, you might need to use smaller plates to make the number work.
A quick barbell math checklist
When you are new, it is easy to second-guess yourself.
Use this mental checklist each time you load the bar:
1. What does the bar weigh? 45 lb? 20 kg? Something else?
2. What is my target total weight? For example: 95 lb, 115 lb, 60 kg.
3. Subtract bar from target. Target − bar = total plate weight.
4. Divide by 2. That number is per side.
5. Build that per-side number with plates. Use the biggest plates first (45s or 20s, then 25s/15s, then 10s, 5s, 2.5s).
6. Double-check both sides match. Same plates in the same order on each side.
Once this feels normal, barbell math stops being scary and becomes background noise.
Common beginner mistakes (and how to avoid them)
### Mistake 1: Forgetting the bar
Loading “two 25s and two 10s” and thinking you are lifting 70 lb total.
You are not.
With a 45 lb bar:
- Bar: 45
- Two 25s: 50

Assuming a 45 lb bar, here are some common totals and how to load them:
- 65 lb
- Math: 65 − 45 = 20 lb total → 10 lb per side
- Load: one 10 lb per side
- 75 lb
- Math: 75 − 45 = 30 lb total → 15 lb per side
- Load: one 10 + one 5 per side
- 95 lb
- Math: 95 − 45 = 50 lb total → 25 lb per side
- Load: one 25 per side
- 115 lb

2. Write the bar weight and plate combos in your notes. Example: “Squat 75 = 45 bar + 10 + 5 each side.”
3. At the rack, load slowly the first time. Talk yourself through it: “Bar is 45, I need 15 per side, that’s 10 + 5.”
4. Double-check before you lift. Quick scan: same plates, same order, both sides.
5. If you change weight mid-workout, re-run the math. Do not assume you remember; take 10 seconds to check.
6. Write down what you actually lifted. This makes it much easier to make small, safe jumps next time.
