The Beginner's Guide to Loading a Barbell

Learn how to load a barbell safely, use simple plate math, and check your setup so you can focus on lifting instead of guessing.

The first time you walk up to a barbell, it can feel like a pop quiz in math class.

You are trying to remember your form, not look clueless, and now you also have to solve, “Wait… how much weight is actually on this thing?”

This guide walks you from empty bar to working weight, step by step, with simple barbell math and a quick safety check.

The simple truth

Loading a barbell is just:

> Bar weight + plates on the left + plates on the right.

That is it.

If the plates match on both sides, and the clips are on, you are most of the way there.

The rest is just using the same plate sizes over and over so you are not doing fresh math every set.

Why this matters

Knowing how to load a barbell helps you:

  • Train both sides of your body evenly
  • Avoid obvious loading mistakes (like a 45 on one side and a 25 on the other)
  • Feel less lost in the weight room so you can focus on lifting

Step 1: Know what the bar weighs

Most confusion starts here.

In many commercial gyms:

  • A standard Olympic barbell (the big one at squat racks and benches) usually weighs 45 lb (about 20 kg).
  • Many women’s or “training” barbells are lighter, often 35 lb (about 15 kg).
  • Some specialty bars (EZ curl bars, trap bars, short bars) can be anywhere from about 15–60 lb, depending on the design.

Gyms are not always great about labeling, so do this:

1. Look for numbers on the end of the bar. Sometimes it is printed near the sleeve. 2. Check signs on the rack or wall. Some gyms list bar types and weights. 3. Ask staff. A simple “Hey, how much do these bars weigh?” is normal. 4. If you are not sure, assume 45 lb for full-size bars in the main racks and benches, and write that down so you are consistent.

You do not need to be perfect.

You just need to know what you are using so your barbell math is the same each time.

Step 2: Learn the common plate sizes

In most U.S. gyms (using pounds), these are the usual plates:

  • 45 lb
  • 35 lb (sometimes)
  • 25 lb
  • 10 lb
  • 5 lb
  • 2.5 lb

You may also see bumper plates (thick rubber plates, usually 45/35/25/15/10) that are used for deadlifts or Olympic lifting.

Quick way to remember them by side (per side of the bar):

  • 45 per side = 90 total
  • 25 per side = 50 total
  • 10 per side = 20 total
  • 5 per side = 10 total
  • 2.5 per side = 5 total

This is the base of most barbell math.

Step 3: The basic barbell math formula

You can think of the total weight like this:

> Total weight = Bar + (2 × sum of plates on one side)

So if the bar is 45 lb, and each side has a 25 + 10:

  • One side: 25 + 10 = 35
  • Both sides: 2 × 35 = 70
  • Total: 45 + 70 = 115 lb

You do not have to be fast.

You just have to be consistent and match both sides.

Step 4: From empty bar to your working weight

Let’s walk through a full example.

Say your goal for the day is to squat 95 lb.

1. Start with the bar.

  • Bar = 45 lb
  • You want 95 lb total
  • 95 − 45 = 50 lb of plates you need to add.

2. Divide that plate weight by 2 (because there are two sides):

  • 50 ÷ 2 = 25 lb per side.

3. Find a combination that equals 25 per side.

  • Easiest: just one 25 lb plate on each side.

Your setup:

  • Bar: 45
  • Plates: 25 per side (50 total)
  • Total = 45 + 50 = 95 lb

That is the whole pattern:

1. Total you want 2. Minus bar weight 3. Divide by 2 4. Build that amount on each side with plates

### Another example: deadlifting 135 lb

135 is a classic starting point because it is an easy setup.

1. Bar: 45 lb 2. Total you want: 135 lb 3. 135 − 45 = 90 lb of plates 4. 90 ÷ 2 = 45 per side 5. One 45 lb plate on each side

Your setup:

  • Bar: 45
  • Plates: 45 per side (90 total)
  • Total = 135 lb

This is why you see 135 a lot—it is just the bar plus one big plate per side.

### One more: benching 85 lb

1. Bar: 45 lb 2. Goal: 85 lb 3. 85 − 45 = 40 lb of plates 4. 40 ÷ 2 = 20 per side

Build 20 per side:

  • 10 + 10
  • Or 10 + 5 + 2.5 + 2.5
  • Or two 5s and a 10, etc.

Pick the simplest:

  • One 10 and one 10 per side

Setup:

  • Bar: 45
  • Plates: 10 + 10 per side (20 per side, 40 total)
  • Total = 85 lb

Step 5: Simple plate combos you can memorize

These combos are handy when you are new and do not want to think hard mid-workout.

Assuming a 45 lb bar:

  • 65 lb = 10 per side
  • 75 lb = 15 per side (10 + 5)
  • 85 lb = 20 per side (10 + 10)
  • 95 lb = 25 per side
  • 105 lb = 30 per side (25 + 5)
  • 115 lb = 35 per side (25 + 10)
  • 125 lb = 40 per side (25 + 10 + 5)
  • 135 lb = 45 per side (one 45)
  • 155 lb = 55 per side (45 + 10)
  • 185 lb = 70 per side (45 + 25)

You do not have to memorize all of these.

Even knowing a few (like 65, 95, 135) makes barbell math feel less scary.

Step 6: Quick safety check before you lift

A loaded bar can move, roll, or tip if it is not set up well.

A simple check takes 5–10 seconds and can help keep things more manageable for you and the people around you.[^3]

Before you lift:

1. Check both sides match. Same plates, same order, same number.

2. Make sure collars/clips are on. This helps keep the plates from sliding around while you lift.

3. Confirm the rack height. For squats and bench, you want the bar at a height where you can unrack it without standing on your toes or shrugging your shoulders up by your ears.

4. Check the bar path is clear. No plates, dumbbells, or bags where the bar or plates will move.

5. Test with a small “mini rep.” For squats or bench, unrack the bar, stand or lie there with it, and feel the weight before doing the full set. If it feels sketchy, rack it and reduce the weight.

If something feels off, it is not “wimping out” to strip weight or start lighter.

Step 7: What beginners usually get wrong

Most new lifters struggle with the same things:

  • Guessing the plate math. They just slap plates on and hope the total is right.
  • Only counting one side. “I have a 25 and a 10 on there” (but forget that is just one side).
  • Forgetting the bar weight. They think they lifted “50 lb” when it was actually 95 with the bar.
  • Changing plate combos constantly. Makes every set feel like a new math problem.
  • Loading one side fully, then walking around to the other side on certain lifts. With some movements (like deadlifts off the floor), that can make the bar tip or pop up.

None of this means you are bad at lifting.

It just means no one ever explained barbell loading in plain language.

What to do instead

Use this simple routine every time you load a bar:

1. Write your target weight first. Example: “Squat – 3 sets of 5 at 65 lb.”

2. Do the math on paper or in your phone, not in your head under pressure.

  • Total − bar weight = plates
  • Plates ÷ 2 = plates per side

3. Pick the simplest plate combo per side. Aim for the fewest plates that get you to the right number.

4. Load plates in this order (for big lifts like squats and deadlifts):

  • Put the bar on the rack or the floor
  • Add one plate on the left
  • Add the matching plate on the right
  • Repeat, alternating sides, so the bar stays balanced

5. Always use collars/clips. Even on warm-up sets.

6. Do your 5–10 second safety check. Matching sides, clips on, path clear, mini rep.
